Women Can Marathon and Relay
A women only marathon and relay, celebrating a 50 year milestone in women's endurance running. 1967 was the year the first woman, Kathrine Switzer, officially ran the Boston Marathon at a time when women were believed incapable of completing the distance under race conditions. She paved the way for women around the world to take on the challenge of 26.2 miles.
The setting for this unique anniversary tribute is the village playing field at Tipton St John, in East Devon, also marking its 50th year in 2017. The fully off-road marathon course is within the district's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it follows the scenic Otter and Sid valleys and part of the World Heritage Site Jurassic coast path.
The event is open to full marathon distance runners and Nordic walkers, as well as paired relay and teams of 4, completing distances of between 5.8 and 7.8 miles. There are prizes in all categories.
The one set entry fee of £35 (£37 unaffiliated) is structured to give all competitors full race support throughout, finisher T-shirt, bespoke logo medal and quality goodie bag.
This inclusive celebration event encourages the men to come along to be marshals and help man water stations - all marshals will also receive a commemorative memento of the day.
This event is organised by volunteers, led by experienced race director and founder of the Women's Running Network Pauline Beare.
The Women Can marathon is the first UK partner event of Kathrine Switzer's global running movement 261 Fearless. It is raising money for the charity Free to Run, which provides women in areas of conflict with access to sport, and it will leave a local legacy of improved access to running coaching for women and girls.
